The sun is out and spring is nearly upon us!

As the chill of winter begins to fade, the first signs of spring are making their appearance in Greater Victoria, and with them comes one of the region’s most cherished traditions: the Greater Victoria Flower Count.

Now in its 50th year, this much-anticipated event is back, ready to captivate the community with the beauty of Vancouver Island’s natural wonders.

Sponsored by local businesses such as Destination Greater Victoria, Coast Victoria Hotel & Marina, Royal BC Museum and more, the Flower Count unites the community in a delightful celebration of spring’s arrival.

This week-long event will kick off on Wednesday, March 5th at 7 a.m., and will run until Wednesday, March 12th at 4 p.m.

Residents across Greater Victoria municipalities are invited to join in on the fun by tallying the flowers they spot and submitting counts via the event’s webpage

But the Greater Victoria Flower Count isn’t just about counting petals—it’s about fostering community pride and showcasing the region’s charm as a top-tier shoulder-season destination.

With spring blossoming across the area, the event provides a perfect opportunity to highlight the beauty of the region and to show off all that Greater Victoria has to offer.

“Our goal in 2025 is to spread spring cheer to the residents of Greater Victoria and encourage them to stop and count the flowers while out in their communities,” the website reads.

“This is a great time to #ExploreVictoria!”

Whether you’re meandering through your local park, strolling through urban gardens, or simply admiring the flowers that line our streets, your flower tally will help contribute to the community’s total.

Last year’s count was nothing short of impressive, with Sidney leading the charge as the “Bloomingest Community” for the second year in a row by counting an astonishing 17,405,364,740 blooms.

Victoria was hot on its heels, tallying 15,932,424,656 blooms. And in the spirit of youthful enthusiasm, Ms. Lake’s class at Margaret Jenkins Elementary claimed the title of the top school in the count.

In total, 38,031,937,388 blooms were counted across the municipality in 2024, reflecting the widespread excitement and participation from all corners of Greater Victoria.

So grab your tally sheets, put on your best springtime spirit, and get ready to explore Victoria in a whole new way.

It’s time to count the blooms, appreciate the season’s wonders, and kick off spring with a floral flourish!
