A former Esquimalt councillor, Meagan Brame, has announced she is throwing her hat in the ring for the vacant town council seat in the upcoming byelection.
There is a vacant seat on council because the person who held that seat, Darlene Rotchford, won a seat in the BC legislative assembly in last year’s provincial election.
Brame is a longtime small business owner, a former early childhood educator and has served 14 years on the Esquimalt town council throughout that time.
She ended her tenure on the council in 2022, when she decided not to run for another term, but now is back and running for the empty seat.
Brame stepped away to run in the Esquimalt-Colwood riding for the BC United Party. However, because the party ultimately dissolved before the election, she was unable to have her name on the ballot.
In her 14 years on council, Brame says she focussed primarily on thoughtful development, support for local businesses, and strong community engagement.
“Since stepping away, many residents and community leaders have encouraged me to run again, saying they missed my voice on Council,” said Brame.
“I’m proud of the work I was part of—whether it was supporting local businesses through the Chamber of Commerce, advocating for arts and culture on the CRD Arts Committee, or helping organize community celebrations like the Celebration of Lights and Buccaneer Days.”

She says she is the best candidate because of her experience in governance, budgeting and public policy on the council.
“Esquimalt is growing, and with that growth comes the need to ensure our infrastructure keeps pace. We must focus on balanced development, smart infrastructure investment, and a vibrant, connected community,” she added.
“I’ve always been someone who listens, shows up, and finds solutions. I’m ready to do that again for Esquimalt.”
Brame says she invites residents to connect with her to share ideas and to help shape the future of Esquimalt.
Voting day in this upcoming byelection is set for Saturday, April 5th, with early voting days on March 26th and April 2nd.
The only other candidate to announce her candidacy is a former Township of Esquimalt staffer, Holly Courtright.
