Police have confirmed that one man has died following a two-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway north of Mill Bay on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 1 and Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road.
According to investigators, the driver of one of the vehicles is believed to have suffered a medical emergency prior to the collision. Two other individuals sustained minor injuries in the crash.
“On February 18 at 4:58 p.m., Shawnigan RCMP received a report of a two vehicle collision on the TransCanada Highway at Shawnigan Mill Bay Road. First responders attended and despite life saving efforts one man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Vanessa Munn.

“Initial indications are that the deceased driver may have suffered a medial event prior to the collision.”
BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) dispatched multiple resources, including an ambulance with primary care paramedics, an ambulance with advanced care paramedics, and a BCEHS operations director.
“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 4:57 p.m. on February 18 regarding a motor vehicle incident on Highway 1 near Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road,” Paramedic Public Information Officer Rachelle Bown said in a statement to Victoria Buzz.
“No patients were transported to hospital. Please reach out to the police with additional questions about this incident.”
During the investigation, traffic was significantly impacted. All southbound lanes were blocked except for the right-turn lane, while the northbound left-turn lane was also closed. The highway fully reopened around 8 p.m.
Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased. The investigation remains ongoing.
