Do you have what it takes to be the next councillor for the Township of Esquimalt?
The Township of Esquimalt has announced that they are now accepting nominations for a vacant seat on the municipal council.
There is a vacant seat on the Township’s council after former councillor Darlene Rotchford had to tender her resignation when she was elected to the provincial legislature during the October 2024 provincial election.
Whoever is voted in as her replacement during an upcoming byelection will serve until the next scheduled local election in October 2026.
Nominees for the position of councillor must at least be 18-years-old as of voting day, they must be a Canadian citizen and resident of British Columbia for at least six months and they must not be disqualified by the law to vote or hold office.
The Township’s six councillors and mayor are charged with providing services for residents such as fire protection, infrastructure maintenance, waste management as well as maintenance of parks and green spaces.
The 2025 byelection voting day is scheduled for Saturday, April 5th. It will have two advance voting days (March 26 and April 2) and mail ballots to make for additional voting opportunities.
Those interested in the nomination process can obtain information on the requirements and procedures from the Esquimalt Municipal Hall during regular office hours.

The nomination period will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 28th.
