West Shore RCMP are issuing a warning to the public after a higher-than-average number of stolen vehicles have been reported in the first months of 2025.
According to a recent media release, police say they have received 22 reports of vehicle theft from January 1st to February 25th.
This is nearly triple the number of reports of theft for the same time period last year, which reported eight vehicles stolen.
Nine of the 22 vehicles stolen this year were pick-up trucks.
Police continue to investigate these thefts, and in the meantime, have shared some proactive measures that vehicle owners can take to lessen the chances of their vehicles getting stolen.
These measures include the following:
- For vehicles manufactured prior to 2007, consider using an anti-theft device, such as a steering wheel lock and/or electronic engine immobilizer
- Keep track of your keys and don’t leave them unattended
- Don’t leave your spare keys or garage door opener (if applicable) in your vehicle
- Park your vehicle in secure, well-lit areas
- If applicable, make sure the garage door or gate is closed behind you
- Keep any valuables out of sight or take them inside with you when your vehicle is parked
