For those practicing veganism or interested in learning more, this is for you!
Hosted by Positively Vegan, Vic Theatre will be showcasing the International Vegan Film Festival right here in Victoria.
On Saturday, January 25th at 1 p.m., the Vic Theatre will provide an afternoon of award-winning films that explore the ethics of veganism, followed by a delicious all-vegan buffet dinner at MeeT on Blanshard.
“We are so excited to bring this festival to Victoria, a city known for its progressive and compassionate community,” said Stacy Neilson, Positively Vegan.
“A lot of our events are more about introducing plant-based options and shifts in an approachable way. The vegan film festival is an opportunity to highlight veganism as an ethical choice.”
The festival will feature a curated selection of 13 thought-provoking films from around the world. Expect personal stories of transformation and deep reflections on vegan living.
And while the focus is not on animal cruelty, the organizers wished to warn of a few slightly uncomfortable moments in the films.
“Just one, The Feast, has 2 slightly uncomfortable scenes at a roadside chicken operation in Vietnam. Each scene lasts less than 10 seconds. Earthling Ed’s film, Milk, shows a cow hanging upside down at a slaughterhouse for about 5 seconds but it is animated,” said the former IVFF Executive Director Emma Schwarz.
“All the others are completely non graphic.”
Though some may be hesitant about the potential for graphic content, Schwarz assures, “I’ve selected predominantly non-graphic films. There are just a few short, uncomfortable moments, but they are brief and not overly disturbing.”
With only around 20 seconds of slightly uncomfortable content over the course of 98 minutes, the festival promises to be engaging and impactful for all attendees. However, the films are unrated, so the event is for ages 18 and up.
After the screenings, guests are invited to continue the conversation over a delectable all-vegan buffet at MeeT on Blanshard at 4 p.m.
The buffet will feature a variety of mouthwatering dishes, and there will also be a silent auction to raise funds for VegFest Victoria, which is set to take place this summer.
“Studies show that reducetarians and flexitarians are driving the demand for plant-based foods – this is an inclusive event for everyone, to join us—to explore a new perspective through a curated selection of non-graphic, thought-provoking content,” said Teesha Middleton, Co-Organizer of the event.
“The dinner afterwards will be a perfect opportunity for people to come together, share their thoughts, and enjoy incredible food in a welcoming atmosphere.”
With seating limited, early booking is encouraged. Tickets for both the Film Festival and the MeeT Buffet can be purchased online.
The cost of the buffet is $50 with a festival ticket and $60 without.
