Vancouver Island is once again proving to be a magnet for movers, with Sidney and Nanaimo making U-Haul’s list of Canada’s top 25 growth cities for 2024.
U-Haul’s annual Growth Index, based on the net gain of one-way truck and trailer transactions, reveals that British Columbia ranks second among provinces for attracting movers, with two Island communities standing out.
Sidney, known for its seaside charm and slower pace of life, ranks 20th on the list. Nanaimo, with its growing economy and central island location, claims the 25th spot.
These rankings reinforce Vancouver Island’s appeal as a destination for those seeking a laid-back lifestyle and natural beauty.
While Alberta leads the pack as Canada’s top growth province for the second consecutive year, British Columbia continues to draw those looking for a balance between career opportunities and quality of life.
“I think people are still moving to British Columbia because it is beautiful and offers a slower, laid-back lifestyle,” said Naga Chennamsetty, U-Haul Area District Vice President.
The U-Haul Growth Index is a trusted indicator of migration trends across Canada, analyzing over 2.5 million one-way transactions annually.
It highlights how cities like Sidney and Nanaimo are not only attracting newcomers but also maintaining their status as desirable places to live.
The rankings reflect a broader trend of people leaving larger metropolitan areas in search of affordability and a more relaxed pace.
U-Haul notes that smaller cities and recreational areas are growing in popularity across the country, with British Columbia’s mix of natural beauty and community feel making it a standout destination.
With Sidney and Nanaimo now sharing the spotlight among Canada’s top U-Haul growth cities, it’s clear Vancouver Island remains a prime choice for movers seeking the best of west coast living.
