After more than 30 years of helping Canadians cook up easy, healthy meals, Epicure, the beloved kitchenware, seasoning, and dip mix company, has closed its doors.
The North Saanich-based company, which employed approximately 200 people, cited market challenges as the reason for its abrupt shutdown—there are reports the company went bankrupt.
Epicure was founded in 1991 in James Bay, by Sylvie Rochette with a mission to offer high-quality, gluten-free spice blends, seasonings, and cookware.
The business quickly gained a loyal following, thanks to its focus on simplifying mealtime with health-conscious, time-saving solutions.
In 2003, the company relocated to a larger, state-of-the-art production facility in North Saanich, reflecting its growth across Canada and beyond.
Known for its direct-sales model, Epicure empowered a community of consultants to share its products through home parties and online platforms.
The brand became synonymous with offering versatile meal solutions that were free from artificial colours, flavours, and preservatives, appealing to those seeking quick and nutritious options for their families.
Despite its success and longevity, the company faced increasing challenges in a competitive and shifting market.
The exact nature of these challenges has not been publicly detailed, but they were significant enough to bring an end to more than three decades of operation.
Word of the closure began after Rochett emailed consultants announcing the closure.
“This was not a choice made lightly, but one born from the weight of financial challenges many in the industry have experienced following the pandemic,” read the email.
“Despite our relentless commitment to our mission of promoting healthier living and supporting time-starved families in creating nourishing meals together, we sadly were unable to recover.”
Epicure’s abrupt shutdown leaves a void for its customers and consultants who relied on its products and business opportunities.
All of Epicure designs, manufactures, and ships all of its products from its office in North Saanich.
