The Liberal Party of Canada has announced that the nation-wide race to decide its next leader will conclude with a vote on March 9th.
To ensure fairness, the Liberal’s National Board of Directors has met and laid out the ground rules for this leadership race.
The vote is to conclude March 9th and the new leader will be announced the same day, the entrance fee for a candidate to join the race will be $350,000 and they must declare their participation by January 23rd.
Additionally, only members of the Liberal Party of Canada will be allowed to vote. The cut-off date for Canadians to become registered Liberal members to take part in this vote has been set as January 27th.
“After a robust and secure nation-wide process, the Liberal Party of Canada will choose a new leader on March 9, and be ready to fight and win the 2025 election,” said Sachit Mehra, President of the Liberal Party of Canada.
“This is a time for Liberals across the country to exchange ideas and engage in thoughtful debate to shape the future of our party and our country – and I encourage all Liberals to get involved in this exciting moment for our party.”
For someone to become a registered Liberal they must be at least 14-years-old; support the purposes of the party; be a Canadian citizen, have status under the Indian Act, or be a permanent resident of Canada; and not be a member of any other federal political party in Canada.
Additionally, they must not have publicly declared intent to be a candidate for election to the House of Commons other than as a Liberal.
Whoever wins this race will become the next Prime Minister of Canada until a federal election can be held.
Currently, the House of Commons has been prorogued until late March by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who announced his resignation on January 6th.
Trudeau will continue in his role as Prime Minister until a new leader can be selected and sworn in.
