Saanich to begin construction on Burnside Road watermain replacement in new year

The District of Saanich has provided an update on a significant watermain replacement project along a busy section of Burnside Road. 

Construction will begin on this project in early January of the new year between Harriet Road to Dupplin Road.

Traffic is expected to be impacted by the construction for an estimated four months. 

Specifically, Burnside Road East will be closed to westbound traffic between Harriet Road and Dupplin Road for the entirety of the project. Drivers who frequent this corridor will need to use alternate routes.

For eastbound traffic, Burnside Road East will be reduced to a single lane within the project area, causing delays. 

During the four-month project, parking will be prohibited on Burnside Road and cyclists will need to follow the traffic control measures, taking the lane along with motorists while travelling eastbound. 

The District says that active transportation and sidewalk improvements are not a part of this project’s scope. Once the watermain is replaced, Burnside Road will simply return to how it was pre-construction. 

For transit-users, routes 21 and 22 will be rerouted temporarily. The affected BC Transit stop will move to Whittier Avenue. 

Throughout the duration of this project, the District says access will be maintained for local businesses and residents, although there may be brief disruptions. 

For those living or working on the north-east side of Burnside, driveway slips will be given out for property access from the eastbound direction.
