VicPD are reminding the public about the dangers of possessing replica firearms following an incident involving a Glock-branded pellet gun in downtown Victoria earlier this week.
On the evening of December 18th, just before 9 p.m., VicPD were alerted to a fight involving five men in the 900-block of Pandora Avenue.
Although the individuals had dispersed by the time officers arrived, security guards in the area reported that one of the men had brandished what appeared to be a handgun during the altercation.
Police were able to locate the suspect nearby and, due to the perceived firearm threat, visible weapons, and his refusal to comply, detained him at gunpoint.
After safely arresting the suspect, police determined the firearm in question was a replica—a Glock-branded pellet gun. The suspect surrendered the item after officers explained the dangers and potential consequences of his actions.
VicPD emphasized that when dealing with reports of firearms, officers must treat all firearms as real until confirmed otherwise.
Replica firearms, which closely resemble functional weapons, present significant challenges. VicPD shared a comparison image highlighting the visual similarities between a functioning firearm and the seized replica.
In 2024, VicPD said they seized 80 real and replica firearms. While not illegal, realistic replicas often cause alarm when visibly carried, prompting high-priority police responses and escalating public safety risks.
“We encourage the community to continue reporting to police if they suspect someone may be in possession of a firearm in public,” VicPD stated.
The case has been closed, and VicPD no further details are available at this time.
