A Duncan nurse, Lindsey Rints, has been suspended by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) for unprofessionally handling patient’s health information.
Although the practice issues occurred back in 2022, the decision was just handed down by the BCCNM to Rints on November 28th of this year.
According to the BCCNM, the issues that arose were regarding unauthorized access and disclosure of patient health information.
“Nurses are only permitted to access personal and health information for purposes that are consistent with their professional responsibilities and are not permitted to access the health records of patients who are not in their care,” reads the BCCNM decision.
“Additionally, nurses may only disclose personal and health information as required to meet their professional responsibilities and/or as required under the law.”
Rints has voluntarily agreed to an eight-month suspension because of her actions.
She will also receive a formal reprimand, remedial education in ethics, privacy and boundaries as well as a requirement to meet with a BCCNM Standards and Guidance Consultant.
The BCCNM says they believe these actions will be satisfactory in protecting the public from having the same issues arise through Rints.
