Oak Bay Police nabbed a 22-year-old impaired driver following a single-vehicle collision earlier this month.
On Monday, December 2nd at around 1 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle collision in the 3200 block of Beach Drive.
Police say a vehicle went off road and struck a light post, and later identified the driver as a 22-year-old woman, who they believed was under the influence of alcohol.
Upon request for a breath sample, the woman’s reading was a “Fail,” which indicated that her blood alcohol level exceeded the limit.
The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, and a ticket for driving without a licence, with a fine of $276. The vehicle was also towed and impounded for 30 days.
Neither the driver nor the two passengers suffered any injuries.
Late last week, Saanich Police revealed a record-breaking year for impaired driving enforcement, with 580 drivers removed from the roads as of November 30th.
This marks the highest number of Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPs) issued since the program’s inception in 2010.
Notably, by the end of September, Saanich Police had already surpassed the total number of roadside driving bans issued in all of 2023, reaching 468 in just the first nine months of this year.
Over the weekend, drivers across Vancouver Island likely noticed a sharp increase in police roadblocks as part of a seasonal crackdown on impaired driving.
