Classical music lovers on Vancouver Island are in for a rare treat next week!
On Monday, November 18th, internationally celebrated pianist Nikolay Khozyainov will perform his “Beethoven Monument” recital at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney.
This marks Khozyainov’s debut recital on the island, offering a one-of-a-kind evening for those drawn to the allure of Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven.
Known for his dazzling technique and expressive style, Khozyainov has gained widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike.
“This young man is a master of romantic tone,” notes Timothy Gilligan from the New York Concert Review. His accolades span the globe, with Anthony Tommasini of The New York Times stating, “The music world is taking note of Khozyainov’s stunning virtuosity and prodigious technique.”
Hailing from a small Siberian town, Khozyainov began his musical journey at age five, with his talents recognized almost immediately. By age seven, he debuted with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, and by his early 20s, he had graduated from the prestigious Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory with top honours.
Over the years, he has won numerous awards in leading piano competitions across Europe, Australia, and Asia, including a finalist position in the renowned International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
Khozyainov’s reputation has reached beyond concert halls, capturing the attention of world leaders and cultural icons.
In 2018, he performed for Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, and in 2022, he was knighted by the Spanish Royal Family and awarded the United Nations Gold Medal of Peace.
On November 18, the recital program will offer two sets showcasing Khozyainov’s skill and interpretation. In the first part, audiences will experience the poetic depth of Chopin’s Nocturne in D-flat Major, Op. 27 No. 2, and his emotionally charged Ballade No. 4. The set will also feature Liszt’s vibrant Valse-Impromptu and his fiery Spanish Rhapsody, allowing Khozyainov to demonstrate his technical prowess.
The second half moves into the solemnity and power of Beethoven, with Liszt’s transcription of Beethoven’s Allegretto from Symphony No. 7 and the intense “Appassionata” Sonata, often regarded as one of Beethoven’s most profound compositions.
This event, presented by Sheep.Co Entertainment and Wonderland Arts, is an unmissable opportunity for Vancouver Island’s classical music community to witness the artistry of a pianist who continues to enchant audiences worldwide.
Tickets are available now through the Mary Winspear Centre. Don’t miss a night of classical music that promises to be both inspiring and unforgettable.
