Stanley Cup returning to Victoria in March to celebrate 100th anniversary of Cougars win

In 1925, the Victoria Cougars won the Stanley Cup, and so in March 2025, the cup will return to BC’s capital to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the big win.

This event is being organized by the Victoria Hockey Legacy Society (VHLS) and it is being dubbed the ‘Century Celebration’.

Back in 1925, the Victoria Cougars won the Stanley Cup while playing in the Western Canadian Hockey League (WCHL), where they beat out all competitors to earn the famed trophy—including the Montreal Canadiens.

They were the last non-NHL team to ever win the cup.

Additionally, they were the last coastal team to win the cup until the Anaheim Might Ducks would earn the trophy in 2007—over 80 years later.

The Cougars then entered the Western Hockey League (WHL) the following season before ultimately dissolving.

However, the team would live on, as a group of businessmen in Detroit bought an NHL expansion franchise and kept the name Cougars.

The Detroit Cougars would eventually become the Detroit Red Wings.

Despite much of the team heading to Detroit around that time, the Stanley Cup will return to Victoria to celebrate the origins of the accomplished club.

The Century Celebration will be taking place on March 29th and 30th, with more details coming closer to the time of the event.

The VHLS had a hand in planning the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada which took over the downtown core of Victoria this past year, which generated an estimated $4 million in revenue.
