A home in Oak Bay suffered extensive damage last night after a tree fell during high winds.
A windstorm with gusts over 100 km/h hit parts of Vancouver Island Tuesday night, leaving thousands without power and causing damage, especially in Greater Victoria, the Gulf Islands, and areas north toward Nanaimo.
High winds caused a large tree to topple onto a home on Oliver Street in Oak Bay, causing significant damage to the back of the house. Fortunately, no one inside was injured.
According to Big Wave Dave, a website that tracks Victoria’s coastal weather data, the highest recorded wind gust hit 109 km/h at Discovery Island—located near the home of where the tree fell.
The extreme conditions caused power outages throughout the region.
At around 10 p.m. Tuesday, over 10,000 BC Hydro customers, primarily in southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, were without power.
As of this publication, most power outages had been restored.
The high winds also led to widespread cancellations of BC Ferries sailings Tuesday night, though operations had returned to normal by Wednesday morning.
