There’s good news for those who enjoy a bike ride or a nice autumn stroll on Mayne Island.
This week, a new pedestrian and bike trail was officially opened in order to provide locals and visitors with a new way to travel around and check out the island in new ways.
The Mayne Island Regional Trail, which stretches 2.3 kilometres, from the Village Bay ferry terminal and Miners Bay village is now available to use.
The Capital Regional District (CRD) says its a two-way gravel surfaced trail that will connect people on the island to nature and to healthy lifestyles.
“I am thrilled about the opening of this new regional trail and the overall expansion of our CRD regional trails system,” said CRD Board Chair Colin Plant.
“Projects like these not only contribute to the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors in the region, but they also help to contribute to local and national climate action targets by giving people a greener way to travel around the places they live and visit.”
This project was approved by the CRD in early 2018 as a way to connect key destinations on the island and contribute to the already established network of trails.
Additionally, this trail’s success as a pilot project will inform the way the CRD continues to expand trails throughout the Gulf Islands and beyond.

“Development of safe and purpose-built active transportation routes like this on the southern Gulf Islands is key to supporting the needs of residents and visitors alike as well as economic development in the region,” said Paul Brent, Southern Gulf Islands Electoral Area Director.
“I am thrilled this project is complete and I look forward to what the future phases of the Gulf Islands Regional Trails Plan hold for these communities.”
The project was funded by CRD, with federal and provincial governments contributing $3.3 million in grants. In total, the project cost $4.5 million.
This 2.3 kilometre stretch of trail adds to the over 100 kilometres of regional trails the CRD maintains and expands, including the Galloping Goose and the Lochside Regional Trails, as well as the E&N Rail Trail.
