Heads up if you’re planning a trip to Tofino.
Drivers travelling along Highway 4 near Vancouver Island’s West Coast should brace for traffic delays, as essential repairs and resurfacing work began on Monday.
The construction is taking place approximately two kilometres east of Kennedy Hill and is expected to last until late October.
According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the base and surface of this section of Highway 4 experienced further degradation due to heavy rains last winter.
The project involves excavating around 100 metres of roadway, enhancing the road base, and installing new asphalt to mitigate erosion in the area.
Given the complex geotechnical nature of the site and to ensure the safety of both workers and motorists, the stretch of highway will be reduced to single-lane alternating traffic.
This setup will be in place 24/7 until the completion of the repairs.
Traffic queues will be monitored at all times, but delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions should be expected.
Drivers are urged to plan their trips accordingly and to exercise patience. Those travelling with over-width vehicles will still be able to pass through the construction zone, provided they have the necessary permits.
As always, motorists are reminded to heed traffic-management personnel and signage, and to drive with extra caution in active construction zones to ensure everyone’s safety.
