A heat warning has been issued for the eastern side of Vancouver Island as we head into the August long weekend.
According to Environment Canada, a strong ridge of high pressure is settling over the area, leading to daytime highs climbing into the high twenties.
Overnight temperatures are also expected to remain warm, staying in the high teens. This period of above-average heat is anticipated to continue through the weekend.
While a cooling trend is forecasted for the end of the weekend, there is a possibility that temperatures could rise again in the coming week.

This warning follows the province’s call for British Columbians to exercise heightened vigilance due to an increased wildfire risk.
Currently, there are 323 wildfires across BC. On Vancouver Island, there is just one active wildfire: the Old Man Lake fire in Sooke Potholes Regional Park, which was updated to a ‘being held’ status earlier this week.
The Old Man Lake wildfire is suspected to have been caused by human activity.
In other parts of the province, various regions, communities, and First Nations are facing evacuation orders and alerts, as well as road closures due to wildfires, many of which are also believed to be human-caused.
Victoria’s daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 25°C for much of the weekend, with no rain in the forecast.
Because of the conditions present, all open burning, including campfires, continues to be prohibited in southern and coastal BC.
To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, an open burning violation or some other dangerous activity, people can call 1 800 663-5555 (toll-free) or dial *5555 on a cellphone. Those who have the BC Wildfire Service app can also report wildfires via their app.
