A driver was nabbed on the Pat Bay Highway Monday morning for an egregious speeding infraction, clocked travelling at 161 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

While it wasn’t clear where Central Saanich police initially spotted the driver speeding, he was eventually pulled over at the McTavish Roundabout, which is located in North Saanich.

The driver was issued a ticket for excessive speeding—defined in BC as travelling more than 40 km/h above the posted limit.

The driver’s excessive speed of 71 km/h over the limit warranted a fine of $483, along with the impoundment of their vehicle.

Under BC law, speeding more than 40 km/h over the limit results in a $368 fine and three penalty points on a driving record.

For exceeding the limit by over 60 km/h, the fine increases to $483—which is what this driver was ticketed for.

First-time offenders face a seven-day vehicle impoundment, which escalates to 30 days for a second offence within two years, and 60 days for a third or greater offence within the same period.
