Join the Sampson family and fellow community members in honouring Wətanmy at an inter-tribal powwow this weekend!
The Honouring Wətanmy Powwow serves as a way to commemorate and continue the teachings of Alice “Wətanmy” Sampson, an ancestor on the Nez Perce side of the Sampson family, and to continue a tradition that Wətanmy held dear.
This event will take place from Friday, July 19th to Sunday, July 21st at Tsartlip Soccer Field in Brentwood Bay, and is a drug, alcohol and pet-free zone.
In addition to dances and honourings, there will be a variety of vendors to browse, food to try, camping and much more!

According to the Sampson Powwow website, powwows are not traditionally part of W̱SÁNEĆ culture, however, after Wətanmy brought it with her from Idaho, it became tradition for elders of the Sampson family to organize and host what became known as the Yellow Wolf Inter-tribal Powwow.
Now in its 29th year, it has grown into one of the largest cultural events on the Saanich Peninsula, and draws around 5,000 visitors every year.
If you’ve never been to a powwow, they encourage everyone to to participate in the inter-tribal dancing, as well as check out all of the vendors’ offerings.
Additionally, you can view their Emcee stand and familiarize yourself with the protocol of the powwow circle, as there are specific rules and traditional practices worth learning about, or ask the organizers.
They welcome everyone into the WSÁNEĆ First Nation’s territory and into their powwow circle as they share a portion of what their Mother passed on to them.
Make new friends and greet your old ones!
