One of the first wildfires of the season on Vancouver Island broke out near Shawnigan Lake this week.
The fire has been dubbed the McGee Creek fire by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) and is currently ‘under control,’ meaning it is no longer spreading or considered a risk.
The blaze was discovered on Tuesday, June 25th and updated to under control at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25th.
The BCWS says that at this time the fire is being contained by two crews stationed in the area. They estimate the fire is around 0.2 hectares in size.
“The fire is suspected to be human-caused and the exact cause is under investigation,” said a BCWS Response Officer.
The fire is approximately five kilometres from the western banks of Shawnigan Lake as the crow flies.
According to the Coastal Fire Centre, Category 2 and 3 fires are prohibited at the moment, which mostly has to do with large burn piles.
Personal campfires are still permitted, as long as they are less than one metre in height and width.
