The investigation continues into the serious two-vehicle crash on Nanaimo Parkway from earlier this week, which resulted in a full closure of the northbound lane.
The collision occurred at around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19th in the northbound lane of the Nanaimo Parkway near the Harewood Wines overpass.
Two drivers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries and the lane remained closed for most of the day as investigations began.
According to a recent update, witnesses told police that a dark coloured sedan with one occupant was seen driving in the wrong direction (going southbound) and collided with a northbound semi-trailer.
Witnesses added that it caused the semi-trailer to jackknife and tip over on its side, pinning the driver. It took first responders several hours to remove him from the semi, and the adult man was later airlifted to a Victoria hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, a Toyota Venza, was also injured and taken to the Nanaimo hospital with injuries. Both drivers remain in hospital care.
Investigations included a collison analyst, who were on scene for most of the day.
“Police managed to speak with a number of witnesses who remained at the scene or had dashcam video of the collision,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
However, they are still in search of an adult woman who was at the crash site and provided emergency first aid to the driver of the Venza. Officers say she left the scene before investigators were able to get her contact information.
