Been putting off that trip to the dump?
Starting Saturday, June 15th, Saanich’s Hartland Landfill will be testing new extended Saturday hours for a one-year pilot period.
They’ll be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.—adding three extra hours to their Saturday service in hopes of making recycling and waste disposal more convenient and accessible for customers.
Their goal is to reduce the region’s waste by one third, and to increase the amount of recyclable material being collected, which will decrease the amount that ends up in the garbage.
Weekday hours will remain Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and they’ll continue to be closed on Sundays and statutory holidays.
In a media release, Hartland Landfill said they’ve seen an increase in customers using the pay-by-weight bin area and the recycling/household hazardous waste area.
This often leads to long line-ups on Hartland Avenue, especially during their peak hours—which is generally 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday to Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
They expect the new material bans on clean and treated wood waste and asphalt shingles (coming into effect on July 2nd) may further increase the demand at the public drop-off depot.
The extension of hours on Saturday are expected to add some relief to these lines and increased demand.
