Bike lane and transit upgrades for Island Highway to begin in West Shore this month

Share

View Royal and Colwood will soon see some major upgrades coming to one arterial route that BC Transit uses to transport people in and out of the West Shore.

Once infrastructure upgrades are complete, a RapidBus route will traverse the Island Highway to make transit easier, quicker and more reliable, according to BC Transit.

In addition to the transit upgrades, bike lane improvements will be implemented along Island Highway to make commuting via active transportation safer and more accessible.

BC Transit says that construction will be underway beginning the week of June 24th.

According to BC Transit, phase one of this project will see dedicated bike lanes and transit lanes along Island Highway in both directions in View Royal.

Phase two will then see a queue jump lane for buses put in at the intersection of Wale Road and Island Highway in Colwood.

Phase one should be completed by this winter, the estimated time of completion for phase two will be updated in the coming months and the Colwood section of these upgrades is still in the planning stages, according to BC Transit.

These upgrades are coming to the West Shore via a $13.2 million investment from the federal government and the Province.

During construction, some traffic delays should be expected through the Island Highway corridor.
