Late last month, Laurel Collins, Victoria MP in the House of Commons made a heartfelt speech regarding the current state of the climate crisis, how it will impact future generations and how some terminology being used is not politically correct.
After posting this video to her own X account, the video was found and mocked by an Australian news outlet, Sky News Australia.
Sky News host Rita Panahi specifically made fun of Collins for saying that climate emergencies are not “gender neutral” as they impact women and girls disproportionately.
Collins was doing so by saying that Conservative MPs have been referring to the NDPs as “climate hysterics.”
This term is one that is rooted in misogyny, as it has been historically used to refer to women deemed to be too emotional by men.
In a segment that was around a minute and a half long, Sky News’ Panahi said in a mocking tone “Oh my goodness, climate change isn’t just going to kill us all, it’s also sexist and misogynist, I knew it.”
Her co-host, James Morrow laughed at Collins and added “Really? So what are the most rational, logical and pragmatic steps we should take here?”
Collins was simply asking people to not use language like “climate hysteria” and to take an intersectional approach to combating the climate crisis, allowing a diverse range of Canadians a voice in the country’s tactics.
