24-storey residential building approved at Uptown Shopping Centre

Share

Some big  changes are coming to Uptown Shopping Centre in the coming years!

Saanich council has officially approved the development of a 24-storey residential project—which will be the municipality’s tallest building!

This new building will provide over 300 new rental spaces for residents, as well as commercial spaces, green spaces, and dedicated no-car zones for pedestrian ease.

It will be erected in the last vacant lot at Uptown, located at the northwest corner of the shopping centre, facing Carey Road.

According to Saanich council, a residential component has always been their plan for Uptown and will be the final piece of their development puzzle—bringing much-needed homes to Victoria.

It has been a long-awaited promise, with the first development permit approved in 2017 for an 11-storey building with over 130 rental units, but it was never built.

This revitalized proposal for Uptown will ultimately bring more benefits to Saanich and the surrounding area, turning it into the hub they initially envisioned.

From public feedback, main concerns revolve around traffic, road crossing upgrades and housing affordability.

At the moment, there is no date of completion for project construction, but in the meantime, Uptown is currently building a Pickleball Court that is slated to open in July.
