Robert Pickton, the infamous serial killer convicted of murdering six women, has died in hospital from injuries sustained during an assault by another inmate on May 19th.
Pickton, 74, had been serving an indeterminate sentence at Port-Cartier Institution in Quebec since December 11th, 2007.
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) confirmed that Pickton’s next of kin and registered victims have been notified of his death, following the appropriate protocols.
Police and coroner have also been informed, in line with CSC policy for inmate deaths.
Pickton’s criminal history is one of the most notorious in Canadian history.
Known as the “Pig Farmer Killer,” Pickton was arrested in 2002 and charged with the murders of 26 women, many of whom were vulnerable and marginalized.
His crimes took place on his pig farm in Port Coquitlam, where he lured women from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
Although initially charged with 26 counts of first-degree murder, he was ultimately convicted of six counts of second-degree murder in 2007.
The trial was one of the lengthiest and most publicized in Canadian history, leading to significant media coverage and public outcry.
In light of Pickton’s death, CSC has announced the launch of a Board of Investigation (BOI) to thoroughly examine the assault.
This investigation will scrutinize all aspects of the incident, including adherence to existing policies and protocols, and will recommend any necessary corrective actions to enhance safety within the institution.
CSC emphasized the importance of maintaining safety and security in their facilities, noting that the case has had a profound impact on communities across British Columbia and Canada, particularly Indigenous communities and the families of the victims.
The organization expressed its condolences to those affected by Pickton’s actions, acknowledging the deep and lasting trauma his crimes have caused.
