With the summer travel season fast approaching, BC Ferries is ramping up efforts to ensure all passengers feel welcome and supported on their journeys.
In a recent announcement, the ferry service revealed plans to expand access to menstrual supplies, introduce all-gender washrooms, and enhance signage across its fleet and terminals.
“BC Ferries has now officially joined United Way BC’s Period Promise which aligns with our commitment to expand the availability of no-cost menstrual products aboard our vessels and at our terminals,” said Lindsay Matthews, Vice President of Public Affairs & Marketing at BC Ferries.
In addition to addressing menstrual equity, BC Ferries said it is also prioritizing accessibility.
By the end of the year, over 300 single-use public and employee washrooms, both on ships and at shore facilities, will be converted to gender neutral bathrooms.
“We are delighted BC Ferries has joined the Period Promise Policy Agreement,” says Michael McKnight, President & CEO of United Way British Columbia. “Their commitment to providing free period products not only supports our goal of menstrual equity, but also sets a fantastic example of corporate responsibility in action.”
Responding to customer feedback, BC Ferries is introducing Braille washroom signs on every vessel, with full implementation by Spring 2025.
Many municipalities and organizations across BC, including Victoria, Colwood, Central Saanich, and West Shore Parks and Recreation, have joined the Period Promise campaign.
