Despite a fire at its location earlier this week, the historic 17 Mile House Pub in Sooke remains open thanks to the quick actions of the restaurant staff.
Sooke Fire Rescue was dispatched to the fire at around 6:16 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5th.
The fire broke out on the second floor of the establishment. Upon arrival, firefighters found that the fire had been extinguished by the quick actions of the restaurant staff.
The first truck arrived on the scene within approximately 10 minutes of the call, encountering light smoke but no visible flames.
After clearing the smoke from the building and ensuring the fire was completely extinguished, the restaurant was reopened, allowing staff and patrons to return the same night.
“We are very lucky there is minimal damage to a partial roof off our upstairs deck. Our smoker caught fire, but staff were quick to react and put it out,” said Managing Partner James Lemire in an email statement to Victoria Buzz.
“It could have been very bad if it had gone unnoticed much longer, so we are very grateful it was not worse. But very little damage and we were open again later last night.”
The fire caused minor damage to the deck and a meat smoker.
Sooke Fire Rescue received support from its mutual aid partners from Metchosin, Otter Point, and East Sooke Fire for their assistance during the incident.
