Last week, 36 screening employees and supervisors were fired from the Victoria International Airport and still have no idea why.
Now, an advertisement seeking to hire replacements for the vacant positions has surfaced online.
The employees were fired on February 6th and 7th following an investigation into their screening practices conducted by the national authority on screening protocol.
The union which represents 27 of those 36 fired employees, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 16 (IAMAW), says that it is unusual for these employees to all be let go simultaneously and furthermore, no real reason has been given to the employees as to why they were fired.
The union is now fighting for answers.
They say that initially, the employer was to provide a corrective action plan for the employees who needed additional training in their screening protocols.
“In the present circumstance, the lack of procedural fairness is appalling and may lead to a dangerous precedent in future matters,” IAMAW wrote in a statement to the employees they represent.
They are calling the dismissal of these employees unprecedented and warn the rest of their members to adhere to screening protocol while they seek more answers about the impacted individuals.
Right around the time the employees were terminated, an advertisement was posted by Allied Universal, the employer of all Victoria International Airport employees.
They are hiring to fill the vacant positions for between $22.77 to $26.63 per hour.
In the advertisement they claim to offer “attractive pay, benefits, pension, training, career growth opportunities and more.”
