Saanich Peninsula residents will have a chance to acknowledge and demonstrate their support for the service of the 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron later this week.

On Thursday, February 8th, the Town of Sidney will honour the 80th anniversary of the 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron and the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force with a Freedom of the Town Parade.

The 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron, established in 1963, is a key component of Canada’s military aviation.

Originally equipped with Sikorsky CHSS-2 Sea King helicopters, it transitioned to the CH-124 Sea King and now operates the modern CH148 Cyclone.

Over the years, the squadron has played vital roles in maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue missions.

Additionally, it provides crucial training for future maritime helicopter pilots and aircrew.

As it commemorates its 80th anniversary, the squadron reflects on its history while continuing its legacy of excellence in serving Canada.

The town will also be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, commemorating a century of achievements, innovation, and service to Canada.

At 10 a.m., members of the 443 Squadron will march from the Mary Winspear Sidney to Town Hall along Beacon Avenue with drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed.

This military march is a tradition that occurs approximately once a decade in Sidney.

At Town Hall, there will be a short ceremony, including a Proclamation, speeches, and a CH148 Cyclone Flypast.

Community members of all ages are invited to attend.
