Been to IKEA lately and purchase a USB charger from them?

The Swedish furniture giant has issued a nationwide recall of its ÅSKSTORM 40W USB charger in dark grey due to potential risks of thermal burn and electric shock.

The decision to recall this product stems from identified hazards associated with wear and tear on the power cable.

According to Health Canada, at least 10,258 units of the affected products were sold in Canada between April 2020 and December 2023.

“Wear and tear of the power cable may pose thermal burn and shock hazards to consumers,” Health Canada warned.

“IKEA develops its products using a rigorous risk assessment and testing program, to make sure that the products live up to all applicable laws and standards on the markets where they are sold,” the company said in a statement.

“Despite this, it has come to the company’s attention that the power cable on the ÅSKSTORM 40W USB charger dark grey may get damaged or broken, after being wrapped around a charger or bent back and forth after a longer period of use.”

The damaged cable may lead to thermal burns and electric shock.

Identifiable by the model number ICPSW5-40-1, located on the label affixed to the charger’s backside, the affected product is subject to this recall.

As of 3rd January 2024, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.

Globally, the company received 17 reports where the power cable may have been damaged or broken with use, some of which included reports of thermal burns and electric shock by consumers.

Those who have purchased the charger are encouraged to return it to any IKEA store for a full refund, without the necessity of providing a receipt as proof of purchase.
