Swans Pub turns graffiti into new logo to make the best of a bad situation

Swans Brewery, Pub & Hotel is a staple of downtown Victoria and has been around since 1989.

In their 34 years, they have seen their fair share of graffiti on the building’s facade, in bathroom stalls and all the usual places pubs tend to be tagged, but never before have they embraced a piece quite like this last incident.

In a recent Facebook post made on Monday, December 18th, the pub announced that they actually liked one piece of graffiti done in their business so much they decided to embrace it.

“A while ago someone came and tagged our front door in the night,” said Swans in their post.

“While it was annoying and disrespectful we kind of liked the image. So we made the most of a bad situation and decided to use it as a secondary logo.”

Some people commented on the post saying that Swans original owner, Micael Williams, was an avid fan of all art forms and likely would have approved.

Meanwhile others pointed out that the bird in the logo looks strikingly similar to a popular bird Mo Willems has drawn in his popular kids series following the character, Pigeon.

But largely, the comments and likes the post received got resounding approval with many able to see the irony in a graffiti artist tagging a business, then having that business fully embrace the logo; the artist being unable to claim the art as their own.

The one who did the graffiti got nothing and Swans got a free graphic designer.

“So I guess this message is to the person who decided it was ok to use our building as their own personal sketch pad,” Swans said.

“We are using your image and if you don’t like it you can come forward and complain about it, we can have a nice chat.”
