New cameras on Vancouver Island highway look to improve awareness of driving conditions

In 2023, DriveBC installed a total of 27 new cameras at 11 locations along major roadways to help improve drivers’ awareness of current road conditions.

These cameras are critical for drivers’ safety in the winter months ahead especially.

On Vancouver Island, two additional cameras were added as a part of this work between Ucluelet and Tofino on Highway 4.

Highway 4 has seen its fair share of closures over the last year due to the Cameron Lake Bluffs wildfire which ravaged the mountainside on the shoulder of the roadway.

After months of work, the highway has since been permanently reopened with massive fences in place to hold back debris that falls toward the road.

This marks the fourth camera vantage point along the only major roadway connecting the eastern island to the western coast.

The DriveBC webcam network is now at 496 cameras delivering 1,013 views of current road conditions throughout the province.

These cameras are placed at key intersections or locations based on needs that residents, contractors or weather experts identify.

In addition to providing real-time views of hundreds of dangerous roadways, they will also provide up-to-date information of road closures, construction projects and they provide safety tips on driving in whatever weather conditions are present.
