A Victoria-based community group is extending their hand to help a family in need!
Victoria Shows Love, a group affiliated with the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA), is hosting a fundraising event on November 4th at Fernwood Community Center for a Syrian refugee family.
The family is currently stationed at a refugee camp in Lebanon after escaping Syria due to targeted attacks.
“My brother Alex, his wife, and their two young children were forced to flee Syria because of the ongoing revolution and civil war in that country that started in 2011. The family has experienced targeted harassment, including kidnapping, torture, and death threats,” said Sasha D., their relative who currently resides in Victoria.
“Alex and his family eventually escaped to Lebanon, where, as undocumented asylum seekers, the family’s personal safety is little better than that in Syria. Alex faces deportation back to Syria at any time due to his illegal status. We need to bring the family to Canada.”
All of the funds raised will go towards bringing Alex and his family from Lebanon to Canada, where they will join Sasha in Victoria.
The situation is dire, but they’re hoping to host a fun-filled event where everyone can get involved and participate in the fundraiser.
The event will feature a night of Syrian music, a cash bar, a silent auction filled with unique finds, and food!
“We are a group of local people working to bring a refugee family to Victoria,” said Nancy Kenyon of Victoria Shows Love.
“We invite you to join us on November 4th in this direct action of hope.”
Tickets to the event are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.
