The Capital Regional District (CRD) has warned Esquimalt residents and those in surrounding areas that things might get a bit stinky in their neighbourhoods this week.
Scheduled maintenance is underway at McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, which is located near the Canadian Armed Forces base in Esquimalt.
The maintenance is scheduled to happen on Wednesday, August 30th between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., but due to the nature of the odours being produced, a certain smell might linger over the Township and its neighbouring municipalities.
Normally, the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant can control odours being released from the facility through their “state-of-the-art odour control” system that they monitor 24 hours a day.
They even have a dedicated CRD phone line for nearby residents to report any smells coming from the facility.
“CRD staff and facility contractors are making every effort to limit the impacts experienced by the community and will continue to monitor this issue as work proceeds over the course of the day,” the CRD said in a media statement.
“We appreciate your patience while we complete this necessary maintenance.”
Updates on the odour situation will be available via the CRD’s X (Twitter) account and their website.
