The thrilling spectacle that has been captivating aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
The Airbase Arizona Flying Museum has taken their show on the road, and they’ve brought two of the most iconic warplanes from World War II to Victoria International Airport for an unforgettable experience.
For the past week, the B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey” and the B-25 “Maid in the Shade” have been making history come alive once again.
Sentimental Journey: A Legendary Flying Fortress
The B-17 Flying Fortress is an aviation legend, and Sentimental Journey is a true gem among them. As one of only five B-17s still flying in the world, out of more than 12,000 manufactured during WWII, this aircraft holds a significant place in history.
It played a crucial role in various theaters of war from 1941 to 1945, most notably in operations over Europe.
During those harrowing missions, Sentimental Journey’s crew braved extreme temperatures in their unheated aircraft, often enduring frostbite in high bombing altitudes.
After the war, the aircraft’s adventures did not stop; it served in training, testing, and air-sea rescue missions. Later, it was used as a fire bomber before finding a new home in the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) in Arizona.
Since then, this aviation treasure has undergone meticulous restoration by dedicated CAF Airbase Arizona members. Now, Sentimental Journey continues to soar through the skies, captivating hearts and minds wherever it goes.
Maid in the Shade: A Versatile B-25
The B-25 Mitchell was one of the most versatile and heavily armed aircraft during WWII.
From high-and low-level bombing to strafing, photo-reconnaissance, and even submarine patrol, the B-25 could do it all. One of the most famous moments in B-25 history was the daring raid over Tokyo in 1942 by the Doolittle Raiders.
Among the B-25s, “Maid in the Shade” has a unique story to tell. Serving with the 319th Bomb Group, 437th Squadron at Serragia Airbase in Corsica, it completed 15 combat missions over Italy and Yugoslavia.
Mostly targeting railroad bridges, this aircraft played a crucial role in the war effort.
After the war, it took on new roles, such as being a trainer and an insect sprayer, before being acquired by Airbase Arizona in 1981.
Through an extensive restoration effort spanning 28 years, “Maid in the Shade” took to the skies again in 2009, becoming a flying testament to the spirit of the WWII era.
A Living History Flight Experience
During their visit to Victoria International Airport, Sentimental Journey and Maid in the Shade have been offering a unique opportunity for the public to experience living history flights.
