Amazon is looking to build their second headquarters somewhere in North America, and the business world has been buzzing about it ever since word got out!

The latest in the line of contenders is none other than our very own City of Langford.

Their HQ2 Bid Committee believes that Langford has the “resources, political will and business climate to ensure” the project’s success.

As we can see in the video, the proposal highlights the amount of services and infrastructure capacity in the area available to meet the needs of Amazon and its workers.

“With competitive wages, affordable and high quality housing, and world-class recreational opportunities, our post-secondary institutions and tech sector are leaders in developing, attracting and retaining first-class talent,” added Dale Gann, Chair of the Amazon HQ2 Bid Committee.

Langford is now the second city to put in a bid for Amazon HQ2, preceded by Vancouver (and Surrey) whose bid was backed by the B.C. government, with promises of funding up to $50,000

All about economic opportunity

We spoke to Dale Gann, who stated that the City of Langford made their bid in partnership with the province as well, and as such, was also promised financial backing.

“This is about job creation and attracting inbound investment for our residents, citizens, and graduates,” Gann told Victoria Buzz. “If we’re successful with Amazon, it’ll be a great opportunity to create high paying jobs in the community.”

Over 100 other North American cities have also expressed interest in acquiring Amazon’s business, including Canadian cities like Toronto, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Calgary.

The deadline for submitting bids was midnight on October 19th, so it looks like Langford entered the running right on time!
