In case you hadn’t noticed, Victoria is in the midst of yet another bout of smokey skies. But this time, the haze comes courtesy of our neighbours down south, who are experiencing their own battles with wildfires.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, in collaboration with Island Health, has issued a Smoky Skies Bulletin for East Vancouver Island, Greater Victoria, Inland Vancouver Island, North Vancouver Island, Southern Gulf Islands, and West Vancouver Island.
According to the bulletin, exposure to increased smoke concentrations is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as heart or lung disease.
Those at risk should avoid strenuous activities and prolonged exposure to smoke.
Individuals who experience any of the following symptoms should contact their health care provider:
- Difficulty in breathing
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Sudden onset of coughing
- Irritation of airways
Should symptoms develop (such as an irritated throat or cough) individuals may wish to consider limiting their activity and exposure. Residents can stay informed of air quality and the air quality health index for their area by clicking here.
Reports of Ash Falling
Along with the heavy smoke, ash has also reportedly fallen in some areas, including the West Shore and Victoria.
However, the situation appears to be most acute in Seattle.
