Strathcona Hotel complex in downtown Victoria will reopen today after sudden closure due to asbestos

One of Victoria’s most popular weekend locations is reopening today after briefly closing due to the discovery of asbestos.

In a post made on Facebook, the Strathcona Hotel announced that the entire complex, including Big Bad John’s, The Sticky Wicket, Distrikt Nightclub, and their other businesses, would re-open at 4:00 p.m. today, Friday December 13th.

“Thank you everyone for your understanding and concern during our closure,” the post read.

The complex first closed early on Thursday, December 12th, after asbestos was discovered by construction workers. Guests were moved out of the building, which was undergoing renovations to the hotel facade and some hotel rooms.

WorkSafeBC officers arrived at the complex while guests were being moved out, according to a statement from the agency.

Since then, the Strathcona Hotel has contained the asbestos-containing materials in a manner deemed satisfactory by a qualified asbestos abatement contractor.

More to come.
