Empress Hotel pardons guest after clusterf**k of events 17 years ago

Back in 2001, Halifax resident Nick Burchill arrived in Victoria with a suitcase full of ‘Brother’s Pepperoni’ – a delicacy from his hometown, thoughtfully procured for his friends here on the west coast.

When he checked into his room at the grand Empress Hotel and found no mini fridge in which to cool his wares, he decided to crack open a window and lay out the meat to be chilled by the brisk April air. Then he went for a long walk along the harbour.

What he came back to was a literal shit storm, involving a horde of hungry seagulls, their digestive systems, a hotel towel, and one of Nick’s shoes.
