Popular Oak Bay waterslides closed indefinitely following inspection

Families heading to Oak Bay Recreation Centre will be without two of the pool’s most popular attractions for the foreseeable future.

The District of Oak Bay says both waterslides have been closed following a recent inspection.

“Following a recent inspection, the two waterslides at Oak Bay Recreation Centre will be closed until further notice while additional assessment and inspection can be completed,” the District said in a notice posted September 8th.

The brief notice does not indicate what was discovered during the inspection or whether repairs will be required.

There is also no estimated reopening date. The District says the slides will remain closed while the additional assessment and inspection work is completed.

The closure appears to be limited to the waterslides, with the District continuing to list regular operating hours for the pool and the rest of the recreation centre.

Oak Bay Recreation Centre’s aquatic area includes an eight-lane, 25-metre main pool, a smaller warm pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room. Along with the waterslides, the main pool features a basketball hoop, climbing wall and rope swing.

Both waterslides have received mechanical work in recent years. During an extensive pool shutdown in the summer of 2024, the District installed new waterslide pumps as part of a larger series of upgrades.

That project also included replacing the pool’s dehumidification and air-handling system, refurbishing plumbing and mechanical components, rebuilding the sauna and completing repairs to the pool deck and tile.

The recreation centre opened on October 24th, 1975, and celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. The building also underwent an extensive renovation in 2003.

The District says updates regarding the waterslides will be shared once more information becomes available.
