Multiple stabbing-related incidents kept VicPD busy over the weekend

Several violent incidents, including four separate stabbing-related cases, kept the Victoria Police Department busy over the weekend.

VicPD outlined the incidents in a video posted to the department’s social media channels.

According to Sgt. Kristin Greffard, Friday night brought a large number of bar patrons into downtown Victoria, contributing to what she described as a resource-intensive night for officers. Police also responded to numerous well-being checks.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, a person was dropped off at Royal Jubilee Hospital with a stab wound.

Police said officers were provided with limited information about what happened, and the incident remains under investigation.

In a separate incident, officers were called to a reported stabbing in the 3000 block of Blanshard Street. The suspect fled before police arrived, while the victim received medical treatment.

At approximately 8:20 a.m., employees of a business in the 900 block of Yates Street reported someone attempting to shoplift from the store.

When staff confronted the suspect, the individual allegedly threw a vase through a display case, causing significant damage.

Police said staff physically restrained the suspect until officers arrived.

According to VicPD, the suspect was held in custody for robbery, assault and mischief, as well as several outstanding warrants.

Later that afternoon, officers responded to the 900 block of Pandora Avenue after receiving reports of a victim suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Paramedics transported the victim to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. That case remains under investigation.

VicPD said Saturday night was steady but did not include any other substantial calls of note.

Officers instead conducted proactive patrols throughout Fernwood and downtown Victoria, along with curfew checks to ensure people were complying with their conditions.

Although call volume was lower Sunday night, police said several major incidents kept officers occupied.

Patrol officers were called to a fight involving approximately six people in the 1000 block of Johnson Street.

Everyone involved fled before police arrived, but officers reviewed video from the area and observed one person who appeared to have been stabbed.

Despite extensive patrols, police were unable to locate anyone connected to the fight.

VicPD’s forensic identification unit was called to process the scene and collect evidence. A victim later attended hospital, and police were told the person’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

While acknowledging that the weekend’s incidents were serious, VicPD said it believes the cases were isolated and unrelated. The department also confirmed that all of the victims involved suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
