Oak Bay Police issue ticket to Ontario man smoking cannabis in parked vehicle

Late last week, Oak Bay Police issued a ticket to a man from Ontario for smoking cannabis in a parked vehicle. 

At around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 27th, officers responded to a report of an individual smoking cannabis in Trafalgar Park.

Police located an individual sitting in a parked vehicle, which had its engine running, and say the officer noted the smell of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. 

The occupant reportedly told the officer that they were visiting from Ontario, and were not aware of BC laws, though they did not intend to drive.

Regardless, the individual was issued a $230 violation ticket for smoking or holding cannabis in an outdoor public place.

According to both BC and Ontario legislation, it is illegal for both drivers and passengers to consume cannabis in any vehicle, whether it is moving or parked on a public road.

Aside from this incident, Oak Bay Police responded to two other notable situations last week. 

On July 29th, officers received several reports of an intoxicated person yelling at children, knocking over an e-bike and repeatedly falling in the roadway.

The individual was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place, was held in custody until sober and was issued a violation ticket.

Additionally, on August 1st, police responded to a two-vehicle collision near Cadboro Bay Road and Upper Terrace Road.

Police say one driver was travelling southbound on Cadboro Bay Road when another vehicle entered the intersection.

Both vehicles were damaged and towed from the scene and one driver was transported to hospital with a headache. 

Police say the collision remains under investigation.
