Nanaimo RCMP make arrest in connection with fire that destroyed A&W restaurant

Nanaimo RCMP have arrested a local man in connection to a fire that destroyed an A&W restaurant earlier this week. 

The fire was reported at around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4th, and fire crews were already on the scene to bring the blaze under control before police arrived. 

The impacted A&W was located in downtown Nanaimo at 60 Victoria Crescent. According to police, the fire caused extensive damage to the exterior of the building. 

Investigators were able to identify a suspect who allegedly ignited the blaze by accessing CCTV footage. 

At around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the 56-year-old suspect was located and arrested without incident. 

Police say he was expected to appear for a judicial bail hearing later that day.

“This fire had the potential to cause significant damage and place lives and neighbouring businesses at risk,” said Inspector Donovan Tait, operations officer with Nanaimo RCMP. 

“Thanks to the swift and professional response of Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews, the fire was quickly contained before it could spread further.”

Tait added that incidents of this nature are taken very seriously. 

Though a suspect has been apprehended, investigators are asking for a specific witness to the fire to come forward and contact the police. 

Police say this witness was seen driving a red Tesla into the parking lot just as the fire was starting. He was also seen on CCTV footage walking into the business to pick up his takeout food. 

The adult man reportedly left the scene but did call 911, though his identity is unknown and investigators would like to speak with him.
