A major search and rescue operation is underway after a charter boat carrying 10 people sank off the coast of Richmond on Sunday, leaving six people missing.

According to BC RCMP, the vessel began taking on water near Roberts Bank at around 11:45 a.m. on June 28th.

The emergency was first reported by another civilian vessel, prompting the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria to launch a large-scale marine search and rescue operation.

Multiple agencies have been involved in the response, including the RCMP, Royal Canadian Air Force, Canadian Coast Guard, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue and BC Ferries.

RCMP has deployed two West Coast Marine Services vessels, the P.V. Lindsay and the P.V. Higgitt, along with two helicopters, an RCMP Black Hawk and an H145 Airbus from RCMP Air Services, to assist with the search.

RCMP say four people have been rescued and taken to hospital for medical treatment. Six others remain unaccounted for as crews continue searching the area by both air and water.

The cause of the sinking has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
