Port Alberni RCMP say three youths have been arrested following an arson investigation after a railcar was destroyed by fire on Tuesday.

According to police, officers were called to the 3300 block of Harbour Road at approximately 3 p.m. on June 16th after receiving reports of a railcar on fire.

Witnesses reported seeing three suspects running from the area shortly before the blaze.

Investigators also reviewed CCTV footage that allegedly showed three individuals climbing into the railcar before the fire started and exiting moments before smoke and flames became visible.

The fire completely consumed the railcar, leaving it with irreparable damage.

“The risks posed by this type of senseless act can have devastating consequences for our community,” said Sgt. Chet Carroll.

RCMP later located and arrested three alleged suspects, all of whom are youths.

Police also thanked a witness who quickly contacted the Port Alberni Fire Department and provided information that helped officers identify and arrest the suspects.

No injuries were reported and the investigation remains ongoing.

They may be underage but their parents/guardians are not, so they should be named and held responsible for all repair costs.
