A 24-year-old man from Esquimalt is facing charges after allegedly fleeing police on an uninsured motorcycle and leading officers on a dangerous chase through Central Saanich last week.

According to the Central Saanich Police Service, officers received a report around 11 a.m. on May 21st of a suspicious motorcycle travelling northbound on the Pat Bay Highway.

A caller provided the licence plate for the older Honda Goldwing, which police determined was not attached to a registered vehicle and did not have insurance.

An officer attempted to stop the motorcycle, which was carrying both a rider and passenger, but police say the driver refused to pull over and sped away at a high rate of speed.

Police said the motorcycle was driven dangerously through the community, creating what they described as a significant risk to other motorists and pedestrians.

The situation eventually came to an end in the 6800 block of East Saanich Road after the rider allegedly attempted to evade police by steering between concrete barriers separating the Keating Cross Road on-ramp from the highway.

The gap reportedly narrowed, causing the motorcycle to become stuck. With assistance from Sidney/North Saanich RCMP, officers arrested the rider at the scene.

The man is facing recommended charges of flight from police and dangerous operation of a conveyance. He was later released from custody and is expected to appear in court in Victoria at a future date. Police also issued several violation tickets.

A 31-year-old female passenger was detained and later released without charge. Neither person was injured during the incident.

As is standard practice in BC, police have forwarded the case to Crown Counsel, which will determine whether charges are approved.
