Recognize Pink Shirt Day with a community screening of A Place Where I Belong at Cinceta on Wednesday, February 25th at 7 p.m.
This powerful, award-winning documentary follows six 2SLGBTQIA+ people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities as they navigate identity, love, and systemic barriers through a non-profit program called Connecting Queer Communities (CQC).
The film introduces audiences to people like Lyle, a gay and autistic man who shares his experience facing ableism throughout his entire life; Alison, a fierce self-advocate and peer coordinator at CQC; and Peter, an aspiring drag queen just getting started on their journey.
Through CQC, they find solidarity and belonging, and a safe place to tell their stories.
This special screening, hosted by Community Living British Columbia, will also feature a panel discussion with the film’s director/producer Rheanna Toy, who will be joined by actors and self-advocates from the documentary.
Connecting Queer Communities is a Vancouver-based social group that creates space for 2SLGBTQIA+ people with cognitive disabilities to connect, share their experiences, and build community.
In the documentary, the group is at risk of disappearing—raising the question of what happens when the only safe space you know is threatened.
This Pink Shirt Day screening is open to everyone with admission by donation, and offers a meaningful opportunity to show up for inclusion, amplify voices that are too often unheard, and be part of an important community conversation.
